FAQ

FFL lookup questions.

What is an FFL?

A Federal Firearms License (FFL) is the ATF-issued license required to deal, manufacture, or import firearms as a business. Every interstate firearm transfer to a consumer must pass through an FFL holder, which is why buyers search this directory for a local dealer to receive a shipped firearm.

How do I verify that an FFL is current?

Use the ATF's own FFL eZ Check at fflezcheck.atf.gov — it is the authoritative source. This directory reflects the ATF monthly listing, which can run one to two months behind, so always confirm with eZ Check (and a signed license copy) before shipping a firearm.

What do the license types mean?

Type 01 is a dealer or gunsmith, 02 a pawnbroker, 06 an ammunition manufacturer, 07 a firearms manufacturer, 08 an importer, and 09 through 11 cover destructive-device dealers, manufacturers, and importers. Type 03 collector (C&R) licenses are never published in the ATF listing.

How often is this data updated?

The ATF publishes the complete FFL list monthly, and we ingest each new listing as it appears. The ATF file itself typically lags the calendar by one to two months, and the listing month in use is stamped at the top of the results.
